In Peniche, Portugal, bobbin lace has been a defining element of local culture since the 16th century, when maritime trade with Flanders helped establish the craft as a major source of income. Practiced mainly at home and taught to girls from an early age, lace-making became, alongside fishing, one of the town’s most important economic activities, reaching its peak in the 18th century and earning Peniche the reputation of a “land of fishing nets, a land of lace.” Although economic changes in the early 20th century led to its decline, bobbin lace remains a powerful symbol of identity, memory, and tradition for the region.
Since the 1980s, efforts to revive and promote this heritage have brought new life to the craft, expanding its use beyond traditional household items into fashion, art, and contemporary design. The Municipal Bobbin Lace School (Escola Municipal de Renda de Bilros de Peniche) was founded in 1987 and the Peniche Bobbin Lace Museum (Museu da Renda de Bilros de Peniche), inaugurated in 2016, plays a central role in preserving and showcasing this living heritage, while the annual International Bobbin Lace Exhibition (Mostra Internacional de Renda de Bilros) gathers artisans from around the world to demonstrate techniques, exchange knowledge, and celebrate the enduring creativity of bobbin lace.
